Purrple Cat is a solo lofi project that started in 2018. It makes dreamy, mostly instrumental lo-fi hip hop for studying, relaxing and sleeping, released with artwork and looping animations built around a purple cat mascot. Purrple Cat has produced 500+ songs with 500+ million streams and has been featured in Disney, League of Legends and Rocket League.

Most of the catalogue is self-released: 36 albums, EPs and singles holding 366 songs. These Self Releases are free to use under CC BY 4.0 on social media and livestreams with credit. Purrple Cat has also released 51 songs as collaborations and 89 on labels and compilations.

History

2018

Purrple Cat started in December 2018. Purrple Cat self-released Up All Night (album, December 7).

2019

Musical style

Purrple Cat’s music is downtempo, instrumental lo-fi hip hop: soft drums, warm keys, mellow bass and ambient layers, usually with no vocals (Memories and Please Hold Me are the exceptions), borrowing from chillhop, jazzhop and chillout. It’s made for background listening while studying, working, reading or falling asleep.

Albums are built around a single place or mood. There are oceans and islands (Pelagic Journey, Oasis, Eye of the Storm), outer space (Sea of Stars, Multiverse) and night-time cities (City Nights). Seasonal records cover winter (Snowbound, Ice Palace), spring (Bloom), summer (Happy Place) and Halloween (Dino Land, Cypress Manor). Several of these are series, such as City Nights, Sea of Stars and Multiverse.

Artwork and animation

Every release has cover art featuring the purple cat mascot, which has appeared on the covers since the 2018 debut. Purrple Cat makes the art and the animations. The animations are made in After Effects and usually loop seamlessly, so a single scene can run under a full album on YouTube.

Purrple Cat Self Releases are free under CC BY 4.0 on social media and livestreams, with credit (“Music by Purrple Cat”). They must never be re-uploaded to music streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) and never registered in Content ID; Purrple Cat Self Releases are never in Content ID.
